Sugar Daddy

Original Sugar Daddy

By Javon Mahabir

Back in the late 80’s, when I was 7 or 8 years old, my molars were taking a long time to come out. They’d get loose, but I couldn’t extract them myself. So I bought a sugar daddy. I’d sink my teeth into it, wait a few seconds, and rip open my jaw! 9 out of 10 times there’d be a tooth stuck to it. It would also gross out other kids (especially the girls). Ironically, I’d use the money I got for my tooth to buy more sugar daddies! Unfortunately, sugar daddies are also good for accidentally extracting fillings, as I later found out.

Cheese Steak

By Javon Mahabir

Who has the best Cheese steak sandwich in Philly? The debate is on, is it Pat’s Steaks or Geno’s across the street? The cheese steak is claimed to be invented by Philadelphian Pat Olivieri in the 1930’s. His creation became so popular he opened his own restaurant on the intersection of Ninth Street and Passyunk Avenue in South Philadelphia we now know as the legendary Pat’s Steaks. Fourty years ago, Joe Vento founded Geno’s Steaks right across the street from the infamous Pat’s. Vento started the place with only six dollars, six rolls and a few hot dogs. The two have been in a fierce competition since, with the delight of hungry customers, of course. Pat’s Steaks and Geno’s Cheese Steaks since their first establishments have each popped up all around the city. There has been a huge debate on which cheese steak has been a favorite among college students.

Little Debbie Original Oatmeal Cream Pie

By Javon Mahabir

In 1960, McKee Foods founder O.D. McKee was trying to come up with a catchy name for their new family-pack cartons of snack cakes. Packaging supplier Bob Mosher suggested using a family member’s name. Thinking of what could be a good fit for the brand, O.D. arrived at the name of his 4-year-old granddaughter Debbie. Inspired by a photo of Debbie in play clothes and her favorite straw hat, he decided to use the name Little Debbie and the image of her on the logo. Not until the first cartons were being printed did Debbie’s parents, Ellsworth and Sharon McKee, discover that their daughter was the namesake of the new brand. Unfortunately, he didn’t tell Debbie’s parents, who were “a little upset” when they saw the packages. Read the rest of this entry »

White Castle

By Javon Mahabir

Every Labor Day I would go to New York to see my family and hang out with my cousins and whatever, but under the fake hugs and smiles that I gave every summer there was a hiding agenda. Don’t get me twisted, I love my relatives (too an extent), but I had a completely different reason for traveling four freaking hours to see my loving relatives. So, what is the reason? Cotton Candy

By Javon Mahabir

When was the last time you can remember going to the circus and begging your mom and dad for that sweet and sticky fluffy ball of sugar and mixed coloring. In America, we call it cotton candy, and in England it’s called candy floss or fairy floss. Whatever name you call it, it’s sure to make that inner child in all of us happy and your dentist!
