In 1960, McKee Foods founder O.D. McKee was trying to come up with a catchy name for their new family-pack cartons of snack cakes. Packaging supplier Bob Mosher suggested using a family member’s name. Thinking of what could be a good fit for the brand, O.D. arrived at the name of his 4-year-old granddaughter Debbie. Inspired by a photo of Debbie in play clothes and her favorite straw hat, he decided to use the name Little Debbie and the image of her on the logo. Not until the first cartons were being printed did Debbie’s parents, Ellsworth and Sharon McKee, discover that their daughter was the namesake of the new brand. Unfortunately, he didn’t tell Debbie’s parents, who were “a little upset” when they saw the packages. Read the rest of this entry »

Owned by Nabisco, Nilla Wafers (short for Vanilla Wafers - how creative, right?) are round, shortbread cookies with a hint of vanilla flavor. Other brands of cookies similar to Nilla Wafers are often called “Nilla Wafers” regardless of their actual name because, like Kleenex Tissues, the brand name has become synonymous with the product. My closet is my own personal grocery store. Whenever I go grocery shopping I act like I haven’t seen food in years. The amount of groceries that my roomie and I lug back the 10 minute walk from Shaw’s to our apartment could feed a small army, and is also the reason we’ll have very happy chiropractors someday. 1) So this one time, I tried to make mini brownies in a doll-sized cupcake tin - but it didn’t occur to me that they wouldn’t need to stay in the oven as long as the normal brownie tin would. Needless to say, it was probably a good thing that they got permanently stuck in the tin or I would have chipped a tooth! Read the rest of this entry »

It’s scary how one box of cereal can define your whole breakfast existence! Kellogg’s Fruit Loops have been around since the early sixties unlike me who was an 80’s baby. Toucan Sam is one of the most recognizable character brands and also has a slogan “Follow Your Nose” that is hard to forget when you have been eating Fruit Loops for as long as I have. So what is it about this cereal brand that still has me all hot and heavy for them after all these years? Read the rest of this entry »

There’s no need to feel bad about leaving a little more than the last reminisce of batter in your mixing bowl for yourself when baking. As far as I’m concerned, the arm strength it takes to mix the ingredients together for a batch of chocolate chip cookies burns enough calories to excuse the heaping spoonfuls of raw batter consumed while the cookies are in the oven.
After my slightly less than successful cupcakes yesterday, I decided to make something I knew would turn out great tonight. I made sugar cookies and chocolate chip cookie brownies. My brother comes over once a week with no other purpose than to forget the rest of his dining-hall-infused week by eating everything in my apartment, and this week is no different. Our normally very full bowl of cookies on the table is quite far from filled right now, and he’s still here for another few hours. Read the rest of this entry »
